From the moment he appeared on the scene in the early 1980’s, at the time when a contingency of jazz was working on refocusing on some of its historical values, saxophonist Kenny Garrett was able to demonstrate through the intensity of his playing, that alto could easily rival with tenor saxophone.
Kenny Garrett has played with musicians such as a Miles Davis, Ron Carter, Elvin Jones, Marcus Miller or encore Mulgrew Miller, recording his first album as a band leader in 1984.
On « Pushing The World Away » (2013), his seventeenth album, Miles Davis’ old sidekick continues his growth as a composer. His friend, pianist Mulgrew Miller notes: « Kenny always gets the best sound out of his sax. But it is his compositions that define his unique “voice”, always more lyrical, end ever more fascinating ».
Throughout the titles of this latest album, Kenny Garrett pays tribute to his many friends: Chick Corea, Chucho Valdès, Sonny Rollins, Donald Brown and Mulgrew Miller himself. « Pushing The World Away » demonstrates that the artist is at the pinnacle of his creativity as a saxophonist and composer, and has endeavoured to create a path towards his own music.
Ibrahim Maalouf’s «quartertone trumpet » enables him to interpret with subtlety and nuance, accents of his melodies meandering between East and West.
His music is strongly inspired by his Lebanese culture, but the instrumentation and the musicians surrounding him give a more contemporary tone blending rock, electro and jazz-funk.
Ibrahim Maalouf releases his first album « Diaspora » in 2007. In 2009 and 2011, he releases the second part of the trilogy, « Diachronism » followed by « Diagnostic ». A year later, his fourth album « Wind », marks an artistic milestone for the trumpeter. Basking in the indisputable glow of « Dia’s » success, Ibrahim changes tone and offers up an original soundtrack of emotions.
Recently, Ibrahim Maalouf receives the award for ”Best World Music Album” in 2013, at the Victoires de la Musique 2014. In this album, all warmth and arabesque is inspired by the paradox and intimate fragility of an artist faced with the excess and aggression of the world he evolves in, returning to a more electric, pop and rock jazz. The result provides a clever blend that typifies Ibrahim’s music; bewitching, meditative, jovial, building bridges between quartertones as much as between the Occident and his native Orient.
