“Extra Large” : the summer exhibition at the Grimaldi Forum

From July 13th to September 9th,  2012, the Grimaldi Forum will stage an exhibition entitled “EXTRA LARGE” consisting of about 50 monumental works from the Collection of the Pompidou Centre on display in Monaco.

Exposition Extra Large Grimaldi Forum

The exhibition Extra-Large, Œuvres monumentales de la collection du Centre Pompidou à Monaco, proposes an overview of the collections of France’s National Museum of Modern Art presented from a completely original angle. The projet is the result of close collaboration between the Centre Pompidou and the Grimaldi Forum Monaco. The aim : to sweep spectators into a kind of vertiginous empathy enabling them to discover the greatest names in 20th-century art

Comprised of about 50 of the most extraordinary works ever created, the exhibit offers the spectator the unique experience of a series of paintings, sculptures, photographs and installations, particularly spectacular for their size or their relationship to space and to the visitor himself.

Confronted by other visual languages targetting the mass public and presented in large formats, such as advertising and the cinema, 20th-century artists have taken up the challenge of popular culture using similar means and especially that of the scale of the object as compared with that of the observer.

The exhibition is an invitation to undertake a broader reading of 20th-century art, exploring the “Extra Large” in its various dimensions in order to grasp its meaning and implications, for both creator and spectator.

Presenting works signed by modern masters such as Joan Miró, Jean Dubuffet, Pierre Soulages, Christian Boltanski and Daniel Buren, the exhibition will also offer visitors exclusive encounters with four of the artists whose works are on show. They will reveal their artistic approaches and share the creative process behind their work.
